I am Dr. Melonie Grannell, Managing Director of Shanghai Blue Lotus Health Consulting. Born and raised in Liverpool UK. I have a passion for Clinical Psychology, believing that a psychological approach brings light to any challenge. I now provide Psychological Services to the Shanghai community. I am registered with the British Psychological Society (BPS), the Health Care Professional Council (HCPC) in the UK and the Shanghai International Mental Health Association (SIMHA) here in Shanghai. I work with health professionals cross the city, provide support for the Shanghai Community Centre and additional psychological services for a number of International schools.
I work alongside individuals across the lifespan, presenting with a variety of challenges and disabilities – learning, physical and emotional. We are all individuals, each with our own life narrative, I therefore take an individualised approach to therapy, in which I tailor the therapeutic intervention to the needs of the individual. As a Clinical Psychologist I am enriched by teachings in a variety of therapeutic models including, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). I utilise these models appropriately with young people and adults alike, reflecting upon a person’s experiences and how they understand these experiences and the emotions that occur at such times.
I believe that a shared understanding, allowing someone to be heard and understood leads towards a path of hope, acceptance, adjustment and facilitates change. I have a depth of clinical experience with individuals with complex mental health problems, interpersonal difficulties and significant trauma, I am therefore accustomed to working with a wide variety of emotional and behavioural issues, including trauma (PTSD), anxiety disorders, depression, mood disorders, interpersonal and relational problems (including Personality Disorders), bereavement and loss, attachment issues, learning and physical health problems.
Whilst living in Liverpool and now in Shanghai, I work with individuals from the global community. Whilst in the UK, many of our clients were relocated through trauma from Eastern Europe and West Asia/Middle Eastern countries. Whilst here in Shanghai, many clients have made a choice to relocate from various places around the world, and are here now in Shanghai. Each and every person has their own narrative, their own reasons for moving and staying, each with their own experiences, good and not so good, each with their own challenges in the present and concerns for the future.
By far my biggest passion is for those individuals and their families who have additional needs in the form of learning difficulties or disabilities, physical disabilities and/or chronic health problems. These more vulnerable members of our community often struggle in isolation, support from specialist services is unavailable and community members and family support declines over time. I am especially interested in how families understand, adapt and cope following diagnosis and beyond. I am passionate about providing hope in these circumstances, enabling families and individuals to continue to grow and prosper. We know that individual needs change over time, both of the individual and those family members and carers, therefore the need for additional understanding and guidance remains.
